Citizenship Application Documents

This page concerns an adult application for a grant of Canadian citizenship. Minor applications, proof of existing citizenship and other citizenship processes have different requirements. Start with the correct application route rather than using one document list for everyone.

Check eligibility before preparing the file

Under IRCC’s current adult eligibility guidance, the ordinary physical-presence requirement is at least 1,095 days during the five-year eligibility period. Some qualifying time before permanent residence may count at half a day, up to the allowed maximum; exclusions and special rules also matter. The old instruction to list only four years of absences was not an adequate physical-presence checklist.

Prepare accurate travel dates and status history for the applicable five-year period and use the official calculation. Tax-filing requirements, language evidence for applicants aged eighteen to fifty-four, and criminal or security prohibitions need separate attention. The physical-presence history period and a police-certificate lookback are not interchangeable.

Use the online or paper instructions that apply

IRCC’s citizenship application page explains online applications and paper routes. Follow the required documents and upload instructions in the online account. The adult paper document instructions are a useful reference, but do not replace the online account’s directions.

Common document groups

Police certificates and different time periods

The current adult paper instructions generally require a police certificate for a country outside Canada where the applicant spent 183 or more consecutive days in the past four years, since age eighteen. The instructions include an exception for specified time in the country of origin immediately before becoming a permanent resident and landing in Canada. Check the exact requirement, validity rule and any later request; do not apply a generic ten-year rule.

Copies, translations and safe preparation

Use clear, complete copies in the required format. Follow the translation and affidavit rules where a document is not in English or French. Notarizing every original document is not a universal citizenship requirement. Agree on a secure method with the office before sending passports, identity documents, financial records or a detailed travel history.
