Visitor Visa Documents

Immigration Insights · Updated October 6, 2026

Visitor-visa documents depend on the reason for travel and the applicant’s circumstances. Start with IRCC’s current visitor-visa application instructions and the personalized checklist provided in the application portal.

Start with the applicant’s checklist

Follow the instructions for the passport or travel document, purpose of travel, financial support and any additional documents required by the local visa office. Requirements for minor children and particular reasons for travel may differ. The documents should present a consistent and accurate account of the proposed visit.

Supporting a relative’s visit

Where relevant, our office may ask the person inviting a relative to Canada for documents such as:

These are examples of supporting information, not a universal government checklist. Home ownership is not a requirement for every person inviting a visitor, and the applicant’s own circumstances must also be considered.

Explain a special reason for the visit

If the visit relates to a wedding, illness, funeral or another family event, identify the reason accurately and provide relevant supporting evidence. Depending on the case, examples may include invitations, event arrangements, medical confirmation or funeral documentation. Provide only the personal or medical information needed to explain the circumstances, using a secure method agreed with counsel.

Make sure the proposed dates, accommodation, financial support and any itinerary are consistent. Do not assume every applicant must purchase tickets, obtain a bank “net worth” letter or notarize every document. Follow the applicable checklist and seek advice about what is relevant.

Copies, translations and submission

Follow the current instructions for clear copies, translations and certification. Keep originals unless IRCC or your lawyer asks for them. Arrange a consultation before sending sensitive records to our office and confirm the correct application portal and delivery method.
