Sponsorship Income Requirements

There is no single income rule for every family sponsorship. The category, family composition, province and applicable intake requirements must be identified before calculating whether the sponsor qualifies.

Spouse, partner and dependent-child sponsorship

IRCC’s eligibility guidance states that most spouse, partner and dependent-child sponsorships have no minimum-income requirement. A threshold can apply when a sponsored dependent child has dependent children, or when a sponsored spouse or partner has a dependent child who has dependent children. Do not apply the parent-and-grandparent income table to an ordinary spousal application.

No minimum threshold does not remove the undertaking

A sponsor must still meet eligibility rules and sign the undertaking and sponsorship agreement. These include support obligations and potential repayment of social assistance received during the undertaking period. A relationship breakdown or financial difficulty does not automatically cancel those obligations.

Receiving social assistance for a reason other than disability can make the sponsor ineligible. The disability exception concerns that eligibility rule; it should not be read as a blanket exemption from the undertaking or every repayment obligation.

Parents and grandparents

Outside Quebec, IRCC’s parent-and-grandparent income guidance generally requires qualifying income for each of the three tax years before applying, based on the correct family size. A qualifying spouse or common-law partner may co-sign to combine income. Family-size calculations and existing undertakings matter.

The linked table currently identifies the 2025 intake. Do not treat those year-specific amounts as a newly announced intake or reuse them automatically for a later application. Check the actual program opening, invitation and applicable tax years before preparing a filing.

Quebec uses separate requirements

Sponsors living in Quebec must follow the relevant provincial eligibility, income and undertaking rules. Review Quebec’s income guidance and the instructions for the category. In spouse, partner and child cases, IRCC instructs applicants to wait for its direction before submitting the Quebec undertaking application.
